American Signal Company
has announced an alliance with The Scientex Corporation in which each contributes their knowledge and expertise in the area of work zone traffic control and management. The advantage of the alliance to the transportation industry lies in the combination of American Signal Company's proven variable message sign technology with The Scientex Corporation's innovative
ADAPTIRTM
work zone traffic management system.
The AMSIG®ITMS™ system acquires traffic condition information utilizing Doppler radar technology that is not degraded by environmental conditions. The system provides this information to the central system controller (CSC) via roadside remote stations (RRS) and wireless communications technology that is not dependent upon easily saturated public cellular phone service. The CSC processes the traffic condition information, formulates the proper response (s), transmits, via the same wireless subsystem, the condition and response information to the appropriate upstream VMS for display to the motorist in a time-stamped, condition-response format (examples below). |

| The AMSIG®ITMS™ technology utilized in conjunction with variable message signs has been successfully deployed, and has performed reliably, in work zone traffic management applications in Maryland, Nebraska, Kentucky, and Illinois. The system as deployed on the various projects has proven to reduce the number of rear-end collisions and lane-change accidents that typically account for approximately sixty-six percent (66%) of all work zone accidents. In providing real-time, time-stamped, credible motorist information, the system is successful in rerouting and/or slowing traffic as that traffic approaches work zone congestion and delays. | ||||||||
| The AMSIG®ITMS™ system, while particularly suited to work zone traffic management situations, can be adapted for use as a management technique for non-recurring events such as concerts, sporting events, seasonal festivals, etc. which result in traffic congestion, but do not warrant the installation of a permanent system. Additionally, the AMSIG®ITMS™ may serve as a "rural ITS" solution for the isolated situation in which congestion occurs at national parks, theme parks, etc. that are not located in major metropolitan areas served by traffic management centers. | ||||||||
